Benefits of humor

Humor has many benefits for communication and persuasion. Here are just a few...

http://studio9.ws/images/cancer.jpg

Better communication

Studies by Fabio Sala at the Hay Group have shown that humor (used skillfully):

  • Reduces hostility
  • Deflects criticism
  • Relieves tension
  • Improves morale
  • Helps communicate difficult messages

Executives who were ranked as outstanding used humor over twice as often those ranked average (17.8 times/hr vs. 7.5 times/hr). They used mostly positive or neutral humor, but also sometimes used negative humor (for example as a put-down). They also received greater bonuses.

Although humor may not be a necessary and sufficient factor to gain all these benefits, it is at least a marker, perhaps, of emotional intelligence.

Research by Clouse and Spurgeon has also shown that a good joke or playful laughter can boost creativity, initiate conversation and generally build a more trusting atmosphere.

Other research by Bettinghaus and Cody (1994) and Foot (1997) showed that humor:

  • Builds rapport and liking of the humorist
  • Makes the target person want to listen more
  • Relaxes the person, making them more receptive to the message
  • Makes the person feel good and hence not think so carefully about the proposition
  • Makes the information more memorable
  • Distracts the person from thinking about counter-arguments

Getting concessions

Playful joking also increases the likelihood of financial concessions during a negotiation. Relaxing the other person and building trust makes them see you more as a friend and hence deserving of a better deal.

Becoming a child

We forget how to laugh

Did you know that the average five year old laughs about 150 times a day, whilst a 50 year old laughs only about five times a day. This drop off happens in several stages - we start to get more serious in our teens, then get even more serious in our adult life as we join 'the establishment'.

As life assails us and we wilt under the stress of it all we get more and more dour. The really sad thing is that we could clamber out of our depressed state just by taking things a little more lightly.

Playfulness

Humor can be used to signal playfulness, where, when you go into child mode, you encourage others to do likewise, temporarily casting off the burden of adulthood and playing just for the fun of it.

Children also rehearse adult behaviors in relaxed and accepting settings. Think of lion cubs mock-fighting one another. Or games of pirates and heroes as a child. Going into child mode lets you try things out that would be unacceptable as an adult.

"Hey, let's go to Percy's and nail his door shut!"

Leading the way

A common question is who will go first, becoming a child and having fun. One attribute of good leaders is that they are emotionally more comfortable with themselves, and hence can be playful without being embarrassed. When you go into child mode, you are also signaling to other people that you are a leader. If they then join you, they will have signaled that they are followers, and the die will be cast for other leader-follower games.

A trick with doing this, of course, is assessing first the state of the other people. If they seem likely to join you in play, then you are on your way. Even if they look at you like you are an idiot, you can still recover your position by smiling gently at them and poking a little fun:

Handling objections with humor

When they object, do not respond with negative emotions such as anger or frustration.

Defuse the tension with gentle humor, maybe feigning shock or otherwise poking fun at yourself.

Be careful about making them the object of humor. It can be done, but you need to be sure first that they will not be offended.

Examples

Oh no! What will we do! (smiling)

Well I think this car would be very sad to see you go home without it.

I think I've lost my touch. (looking at hands with puzzled expression)

How it works

When you receive objections it can be very frustrating and it is very easy for these emotions to leak out. By reframing the situation with gentle humor, you can show that you are not offended by their refusal.

Remember that they, too, may find objecting embarrassing and uncomfortable, with the result that they may well want to get away from you (and the embarrassment) as soon as possible.

A Wonderful Life

It’s A Wonderful World - The story of a man who shakes off the dust of a small New England town and changes the world in the process.

As Mr Potter said. George Bailey was a bright young man, people liked him, he was intelligent, articulate, all the qualitites that made for success…

After his surprise victory over Roosevelt, George Bailey was acclaimed as one of the visionary leaders of the time. recognizing early on the threat posed by Hitler in Germany and Mao in China, George mobilized reticent governments against them. Avoiding World War II entirely by keeping Hitler from assuming power, George turned the world’s attention on Africa and created the largest world-wide public works efforts in history, pulling the entire world from the depths of the Depression. And as for China, once convinced that Communism was a fools strategy, it was small step to enter the union as the 49th state, ensuring that all of WalMart’s goods would actually be made in America.

Mary Bailey was instrumental in the creation of the Bedford Falls Center for Literacy and Culture, known worldwide for its campaign to eradicate ignorance, and promote world peace through developing appreciation of diverse cultures. The real breakthrough occurred when the Sixteen Vowel Translation system was developed, allowing anyone to learn a foreign language in three weeks. George always claimed that without Mary’s system the annexation of China might never have taken place.

After retiring from politics, George, with his brother Harry founded the Bailey Research Institute and almost immeidately discovered Baileyranium, an isotope that not only eliminated cancerous cells in the body , but was laughably cheap to produce using seawater. Additionally a byproduct of its production was an almost imitless amount of easily harnessed power. Since the world had no need for oil, middle eastern countries were forced to develop a much smaller economy exporting sand for rebuilding hurricane damaged beaches.

George used the power produced by Baileyranium to establish true interstellar flight and founded the first moon based retirement colony, which with the lower gravity enabled frail senior ciizens to live substantially longer than their Earthbound friends. Mars proved to be the real jewel when it was discovered the red dust on its surface was almost entirely Baileyranium, ensuring an energy source for ages to come.

In their later years George and Mary spent time on the Million Angels March, in which school children from around the world all rang bells on April fifteenth to commemorate the abolishment of the income tax in the United States and the greening of the Sahara desert in Africa. Both made possible through the advances made with Baileyranium.

As for the others in Bedford Falls: Mr Potter died of an aneurism when he heard George had won the presidency. Ernie the cabdriver and Bert the policeman sold their names to Sesame Street for a tidy sum, Violet became a star, of sorts, on the internet at Violet’s Playground dot com, Zuzu became a rock star, and Uncle Billy beame a succesful televangelist after drying out at the Betty Ford Clinic. George and Mary became the longest lived residents at Bailey’s Lunaville Retirement Center.
